Headstone basics
Choosing a memorial is usually something a family does only once. Here are the things worth knowing before you decide.
Types of memorials
Flat markers sit level with the ground and are the easiest to mow around. Slant and bevel markers rise gently for better readability. Upright monuments — single or double (companion) — stand on a base and offer the most space for names, dates, and carving.
Stone & material
Most modern memorials are granite, chosen for its hardness and resistance to weather. Georgia Gray is a classic, economical choice; darker granites hold etched detail beautifully. Older marble and limestone stones are softer and weather faster, which is why they need gentler care.
Lettering & design
Sandblast lettering is the standard and lasts for generations. Names, dates, an epitaph, and artwork such as roses, crosses, praying hands, or military emblems can all be carved. Laser etching allows portraits and scenes on polished dark granite.
Sizes & cemetery rules
Every cemetery sets its own rules for allowable size, style, and base requirements — some permit uprights only in certain sections. We check the cemetery's regulations before anything is ordered so the monument is approved the first time.
Foundations & setting
An upright monument needs a concrete foundation poured by the cemetery, which is billed separately. Once it's cured, the monument is set on the foundation, leveled, and sealed so it stands true through Indiana's freeze-thaw seasons.
How long it takes
Plan on roughly 8 to 12 weeks from approved design to setting, depending on the granite, carving detail, and cemetery scheduling. We'll give you a realistic timeline up front and keep you posted along the way.

Once you approve the proof and the cemetery signs off, the stone goes into production.
