How much does it cost to clean a headstone?
Flat grave markers start at $75, small upright headstones at $100, and large upright or double monuments at $150. Unique or oversized custom stones are quoted individually from $175. How often should a headstone be cleaned?
Most memorials benefit from a professional cleaning every one to two years, depending on the stone, its surroundings, and how much shade and moisture it gets. Stones under trees or in low-lying areas grow moss and algae faster. Our ongoing care plans schedule cleaning and inspection visits annually, biannually, or seasonally so the stone stays clean and legible year after year.
Is it safe to pressure-wash a headstone?
No. Pressure-washing, sandblasting, and harsh acids can etch the surface, erode carved lettering, and force water into the stone to cause cracking and spalling. We never use them. Instead we use gentle, pH-neutral biological cleaners and low-pressure rinsing that lift growth and staining without damaging the stone.
What do professionals use to clean headstones?
We use pH-neutral, stone-safe biological cleaners designed for cemetery monuments that break down moss, algae, lichen, and organic staining without harming the stone. Our process includes edge trimming, gentle moss scraping, detail work on the carving and inscription, a multi-step biological wash, and a low-pressure rinse, finishing with same-day digital photos.
Can a leaning or sunken headstone be fixed?
Yes. Frost heave, settling soil, and age commonly cause monuments to lean, sink, or shift. We carefully lift the stone, excavate and rebuild a stable, well-compacted gravel and stone-dust base, then reset it plumb, level, and secure. If a stone we've re-leveled settles within a year, we come back and set it right — our work is guaranteed.
